This guide shows you how to lay a Flow out left to right instead of top to bottom, turn some of its nodes the other way, and choose the direction new Flows start in.
A Flow reads in one of two directions:
Direction | Inputs | Outputs | Side handles (for example the Item output of List - Map) |
|---|---|---|---|
Top to bottom (the default) | Top of the node | Bottom of the node | Right of the node |
Left to right | Left of the node | Right of the node | Bottom of the node |
A node can have its own direction, which overrides the Flow's for that node's handles. Every other node follows the Flow.
Result: The Flow switches direction and every node is mirrored across the diagonal from the top-left corner of the Flow, so a chain that ran down the canvas now runs across it. The top-left corner of the Flow stays where it was. Nodes with their own direction switch too, so they still differ from the Flow.
Result: Each selected node turns to the opposite of the direction it had, and the selection is mirrored across the diagonal from its own top-left corner, so it stays in place. A node turned back to the Flow's direction follows the Flow again.
Both actions are part of the editor history: Undo (⌘ Z / Ctrl Z) reverts them in one step.
Result: Flows you create afterwards, in the Flow editor or with the API or CLI without a direction, start in that direction. Existing Flows keep theirs.
